What Does Hero Mean?
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for the estimated 7,000 children in our region living with serious mobility challenges. Our impassioned volunteers, board of directors and staff want to give all children the childhood they deserve no matter what their physical disabilities are by providing them with life-changing adaptive recreational equipment, specially adapted vehicles and access to therapeutic extracurricular activities. Our grants help “Variety kids” gain mobility, get out and about in their neighborhoods, communicate, interact, achieve independence and increase their self-esteem. Our support allows families to take their otherwise homebound kids on bike rides, horseback riding or swimming lessons and to discover new places and new adventures through the use of an adapted van. Variety DC celebrates their hard work and courage and is proud to support their unique needs through our fundraising activities. We are motivated to grow the number of children we support when we see our Variety kids ride a specially-designed adapted bike for the first time or be able to go to a place they’ve never seen before.
